the Sawatzky Nomad

We hope to keep all of our cross-provincial friends, and those abroad, updated with this blog. And maybe even hear from some who are long lost friends.

Life without a Suckey

Well, Monday was an absolute delight. Nadia was happy and independent. She didn't even whine until late in the day - not normally the norm. We had a ton of people over with a ton of kids and she was great. I'm loving this, and naptime and bedtime are getting better. The whining is down from 45 minutes to 5. And she's sleeping through the night - ah sheer bliss!

The only aftermath of the suckey is that we try not to talk about it, even if she asks. (Actually, one of her toy babies had a suckey attached with a ribbon - we cut that off! We're sneaky!) In fact her word for suckey sounds a lot like Daddy. So when she asks for the suckey I tell her Daddy took the car to work and he'll be home soon. Then I suggest she play with a toy, like Mr. Potatoe Head, and she's off and running. How great is that? So I guess the Lord even cares about this little suckey problem and we are forever grateful.

the Beloved suckey

Well, Nadia is 20 months old now and for the past many months I have been wanting to get rid of her soother. It really hasn't bothered me much until a few weeks ago. Which is when she really got addicted to it. She used to have it every once in a while during the day, but lately it's always in her mouth. So I talked to a friend who inspired me to just do it - and get rid of it once and for all. Her child was the same way, very addicted, and he was fine after a few bouts of screaming. Could this work for us too?

I was going to wait until Wednesday, after Young Mom's where she needs extra comfort because she is playing with a ton of other kids for a few hours. But, funny thing is that after church I put her suckey in my purse and then last minute Grandma said, "Why don't I take Nadia and you can go out for lunch in the city with Auntie Joanne." Cool, so we went and the soother came with me. Opps. Well, Nadia didn't even seem to need it for her nap, and she didn't ask for it all day. So I was encouraged that it must be a good day to say good bye to a bad habit.

I cut the entire end off both soothers and felt completely sick doing it - no turning back. Then in the evening when she asked for it. I put it on the kitchen floor and told her where it was. She saw it, giggled with sheer glee, and popped it in her mouth. Then we waited for the screaming. She knows there are 2 soothers so she examined that one and decided it was broken so she better find the other one. She went looking. Again I put the other soother next to the first in the kitchen. She giggled with glee, thinking oh good. She examined both very carefully and we helped her decide they were broken. She wasn't giving up - there must be a good one in the diaper bag. She tore it apart looking and when we got to the bottom she realized that both the soothers are broken. I asked her if we should throw them out because they're garbage now.

To my surprise, she gladly agreed, and tossed them in. She looked a few times after that to make sure they were still broken and that was it. I don't think she's ever laughed and giggled so much in the evening before. Until bedtime that is. And without thinking, upon her request, I read her a story that had a suckey in it. Opps. We didn't finish the story because the whining was too great. So she whined for 45 minutes in her crib. So we'll see how tomorrow goes. Oh, boy! What have we done?!

Congratulations

Congratulations to Clint & Karen. The doctor and the ultrasound tech said it looks more likely to be a girl...well, I guess 2 wrongs make a boy in this case!

Owen Nicholas was born October 17th at 8:08am. He weighed in at 6 lbs. 5 oz. and is about 19 inches in length. We are very excited for Clint and Karen. You guys are going to be great parents.

Nadia's Birthday Greeting

Tim taught Nadia to say, "Happy birthday Mummy". When Tim brought me breakfast in bed Nadia came too and they said Happy birthday to me together. It was great!

Birthday Birds

Well, it's Lisa's tradition to give a gift that's a little crazy. She gave Tim live crabs one Christmas and this year for my Birthday she gave me the choice of a few different live pets. Oh boy, that was a hard decision. The choices were a chinchilla, a degu or 2 finches. I had really wanted a chinchilla for Nadia to play with until I counted up how much a cage and accessories were going to be. So the finches won - we already had a cage and accessories. So here they are. I had no idea they would be so active. They are so very cute, with their little cheeps and peeps. I like the cheerful noise. They sure are hard to photograph.

new du

Nadia is such a girl. She loves to see her hair done up. The only problem is she's too curious and pulls out the elastic. But, I think she's too cute.

the Move

Here we were still having fun, even though we were surrounded by boxes and mess. Tim is so great at making life fun. And Nadia has that gift as well.

Moving Day - thanks to everyone who helped us move. It went really smoothly, 1 1/2 hours to load and 1 hour to unload. Thank you, thank you. I just have to laugh at Lee. He just couldn't bear to see the last bit of ice cream go to waist. All the spoons were packed, but he wasn't going to give up. He found a cup to scoop out the ice cream and away he went. Way to be creative Lee! I love it!

When we moved out of our apartment Nadia saw that it was bare and freaked out. So I was a little concerned. Turns out she thought it was great fun. Thanks to Becca who kept her entertained and laughing. And Auntie Lisa for the cookies Nadia mooched off Grandma.

Nadia was really getting into the spirit of moving. She thought it was hilarious that she could move these bins back and forth between the rooms of our new place. Well, it's been over a week since we moved and all the necessary boxes are unpacked and put away. It's nice to be settled. We are loving our two level duplex. It feels huge. Nadia has a rec. room to play in and we love that. Posted by Picasa
